Navigating post graduation can be tough. It is a time filled with many mixed emotions. Feeling accomplished and happy to have completed a degree, yet being overwhelmed and not sure of what is to come. For many of us, having a job lined up right after graduation is not realistic. I myself fit into this category and have been having a somewhat difficult time with this reality. Through reflection and optimism, I have decided to switch my lens from disappointment to opportunity and motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pressure to Find a Job<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A job provides financial security and a sense of purpose and direction, especially for a young professional. Ultimately, a job is the goal and reason to pursue a college degree. As I was nearing graduation, I felt a lot of pressure to find a job for these reasons, as well as the anxiety of a gap on my resume. I felt that without an immediate job, it would look bad to future employers that I had this time period of not getting \u201cexperience\u201d and worried it would cause me to be perceived as unmotivated. I also experienced disappointment and thoughts that maybe I didn\u2019t do enough in my undergraduate career to secure an immediate job and worried that I had fallen behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Changing My Perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Upon reflection, I have accepted my situation and switched my lens to opportunity. I have realized I don\u2019t need a job for a sense of purpose and there are many other ways I can continue to learn and grow personally and in the industry I am in. Although a job is the easiest way to provide financial security, I have also realized there are other opportunities to make money on the side through freelance opportunities and part-time endeavors. Everyone\u2019s financial situation after graduation can look very different, which can shape the opportunities, pressures and challenges they experience during this transition. The most impactful part of this is managing money and savings in a responsible manner. Right now was never a time I was expecting a huge paycheck. It is more of a growth period to learn and expand my talents and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ways to Continue Growing Outside of Traditional Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
I have found there are many different ways to stay productive and keep growing outside of a traditional job. One thing I have found that helps me is a routine. Waking up earlier every day at the same time and being active helps me start my day off well. A routine looks different for everyone, but some form of structure can make a huge difference in motivation and productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every day I like to do something creative to continue growing my skills. That is one reason I decided to start writing blog posts. I also enjoy painting and drawing and I find it leaves me inspired. Another way I stay creative is by being active on social media. I have an Instagram and TikTok dedicated to my creative projects. I find that essentially managing my own brand and content is a great way for me to gain experience in the advertising and marketing industry. Little side projects can be a great creative outlet as well. Sometimes I make mock campaigns for companies I love and it not only builds my skills and confidence, but it also leaves me with a portfolio piece. Incorporating creative activities has worked great for me to stay busy, inspired and expand upon my skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Job Search<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Even though I have accepted my situation, my goal is still to secure a full-time job. Each week I take time to look through job listing platforms and apply to roles that I see myself being a good fit for. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a job that aligns with what I want to do and qualify for. I find it helpful to keep an open mind and realize I may end up loving something that does not seem as appealing at first. A role that may not be my dream job could still provide me with valuable knowledge and experience that helps me grow professionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another thing I try to remind myself during this process is not to get discouraged. Rejection can be difficult and even seeing that \u201c100+ people applied\u201d on a job posting can sometimes feel intimidating. Reminding myself of the work I have done and continue to do helps me maintain confidence in myself and my abilities. We are all unique people with different skill sets, experiences and strengths and I remind myself that eventually there will be an opportunity that aligns with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I also try to approach this process with compassion and optimism. I think it can be easy for people to become frustrated and negative, especially with how difficult the job market and hiring process can feel at times. Negative emotions can be completely valid in this process, but I find getting too caught up in them can be counterproductive. Whenever I start to feel frustrated, I try to put myself in the shoes of the employer. Hiring teams are likely facing difficult situations too and making stressful decisions. Reminding myself of this helps me approach the process with more patience and understanding rather than resentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moving Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
As I move forward in this transition period, I continue to keep my head held high. Sure, there will be days where I am not feeling so great, but I have already seen overall improvement since I started to implement my routine and positive outlook. If you are a recent graduate in a similar position, I hope I reminded you that it is okay not to have everything figured out right away. There are many other opportunities to keep learning, growing and moving toward your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
